MUSHROOM PLUG SPAWN

|
An Important Note for our Customers in the Hawaiian Islands
The Hawaii State Department of Agriculture has recently increased their restrictions on the importation of live mushroom mycelium into the islands. This affects the sale of Fungi Perfecti's Indoor and Outdoor Mushroom Patches, Plug Spawn for Log and Stump Cultivation, and Pure Mushroom Spawn and Cultures. Customers in Hawaii wishing to purchase any of these products will need to first apply for and receive an Import Permit from the HSDA Plant Quarantine Branch. Additionally, importation of our MycoGrow products is completely prohibited.
The permit can be downloaded in Adobe Acrobat format online here. If you have further questions, you can contact Fungi Perfecti or speak directly to Amy Takahashi at the Hawaii State Department of Agriculture, 1428 S. King Street, Honolulu, HI 96814. Phone: (808) 973-9560.

Ganoderma lucidum: Reishi or Ling Chi
Known to the Japanese as Reishi and to the Chinese as Ling Chi, this species produces a flat, shelf-like mushroom, with a smooth, lacquered finish. Plug spawn of this species can inoculate hardwood stumps or logs; after incubating the logs may be partially buried, horizontally-oriented. This helps conserve water during fruiting. Reputed to have immune-stimulating properties by both the Chinese and Japanese, Ganoderma lucidum has long been used in teas.

Grifola frondosa: Maitake or Hen of the Woods
Grifola frondosa grows prolifically on oaks throughout the temperate regions of eastern North America. Stumps or logs may be inoculated; after the incubation period, the logs should be partially buried, horizontally, to initiate fruiting (we strongly recommend using oak, elm or locust). Fruitings most frequently arise at or near the stump/soil interface. Two or three years will often pass before fruitings occur. This delicious mushroom is also heralded in Asian medicine as a powerful immune stimulator.

Hericium abietis: The Conifer Coral Mushroom
Hericium abietis grows exclusively on conifers and is very similar in appearance to Hericium erinaceus. Native to western North America, the Conifer Coral Mushroom has a delicate and pleasant flavor. Plug spawn of this species can inoculate stumps or logs; after incubating the logs may be partially buried, vertically-oriented, to conserve water during fruiting.

Hericium erinaceus: The Lion's Mane Mushroom
Hericium erinaceus grows primarily on hardwoods, though conifers can also be used with some success. Stumps or logs can be used for inoculation. The spawn plugs should be inserted into the open face of cut stumps. This eminently edible mushroom species is ideal for inoculation into logs, stumps or partially buried, vertically-oriented logs; after incubating the logs may be partially buried, vertically-oriented, to conserve water during fruiting. Hericium erinaceus is widely distributed on hardwoodsparticularly oaksacross much of North America. These are beautiful mushrooms, with cascading white icicle-like spines, and are some of the best of the edible fungi.

Lentinula edodes: Shiitake
Shiitake mushrooms have been hailed for both their culinary and health benefits in Japan and other parts of Asia for hundreds of years, and their popularity worldwide increases every year. Found primarily on thicker-barked hardwoods like oak, they also do well on “scrub” hardwoods like alder although longevity of the logs will be less than that of other hardwoods. Logs or stumps can be inoculated; after incubating the logs may be partially buried, vertically-oriented, to conserve water during fruiting. When properly cared for, our hardy strain of Shiitake will begin to fruit in as little as 6 months, with the most substantial fruitings appearing 12 years from inoculation.

Sawdust Spawn; sufficient to inoculate 3050 logs.
SSLE100 $19.00 (Please note: Unlike our ready-to-grow Mushroom Patches and Mushroom Plug Spawn, our Sawdust Spawn does not come with instructions. It is assumed that the purchaser is sufficiently familiar with mushroom culture technique to utilize these cultures. The books Growing Gourmet & Medicinal Mushrooms and The Mushroom Cultivator are essential tools in this endeavor. )

“I just wanted to share these. I ordered some shiitake sawdust spawn and inoculated several water oak logs back in May 05. I had my first fruiting a couple of weeks ago and it was incredible! I brought them out of the woods while fruiting (so the squirrels etc wouldn’t get into them). I live on the northeast FL coast. Not bad for a first timer!”

Pleurotus ostreatus: Pearl Oyster
Pleurotus ostreatus is probably the most common edible mushroom found on hardwoods. Growing on alder, cottonwood, poplar, oak, birch, beech, aspen and many other hardwoods, our aggressive strain is renowned for its productivity. Hardwood logs and stumps can be used for inoculation; after incubating the logs may be partially buried, horizontally-oriented, to conserve water during fruiting.

Pleurotus pulmonarius: The Phoenix Fir Oyster
This member of the Tree Oyster family thrives on conifer stumps and logs, especially spruces and fir; after incubating the logs may be partially buried, vertically-oriented, to conserve water during fruiting. This species enjoys warm climates, producing large, white-beige mushrooms.

Laetiporus conifericola*: Chicken of the Woods
Chicken of the Woods grows on softwoods including hemlocks, Douglas Fir, true firs, and spruce. Stumps, rather than cut logs, are the recommended candidate for inoculation; logs can be used and buried vertically in sand, sawdust or gravel after incubation. Producing a multi-layered, shelf-like mushroom (sometimes called wood conks), Chicken of the Woods has an easily distinguished orange mycelium. Given the right conditions, mushrooms will form in 612 months; the stump will begin to decompose, and mushrooms will fruit for several years thereafter.

Turkey Tail (Trametes versicolor)
Found throughout North America and widely distributed around the globe, few mushrooms can boast such adaptivity and variety of colors, hence the name “versicolor”. Logs and stumps can be used for cultivation; after incubating the logs may be partially buried, horizontally-oriented, to conserve water during fruiting. This species is often used to make teas, and is one of the most well-studied MycoMedicinal® mushrooms in the world.

Spored Oils
We offer unique blends of spored oils, one for decomposing stumps of conifers and one for hardwoods. These oils are designed as environmentally friendly, biodegradable lubricants for chain-saws and other wood cutting tools (dilute 1:10 with canola oil for best results). As the wood is being cut, the spore-mass infused oil disperses mushroom spores into the cut faces of wood, and upon germination of spores accelerate the decomposition of stumps and brush. Stamets says, "Here is an alternative for reducing fuel load in the forest to prevent forest firesdon't rob the carbon bank by removing littersaprophytize with fungi!"
